Study lessons for the ECL and ALCPT

Learn a rule in a few minutes, check yourself, then practice it in the trainer. Every example can be read aloud in American English, and you can translate any word into your own language.

Grammar

Each lesson has colored rule cards, tables, common mistakes and a quick check of five or six questions.

  1. Lesson 1

    Verb tenses

    All 12 tenses with their form, their use and the time words that signal them, plus the ways to talk about the future.

  2. Lesson 2

    Conditionals

    Zero, first, second, third and mixed conditionals, plus unless, in case, wish, if only and formal inversion.

  3. Lesson 3

    Modal verbs

    Ability, permission, obligation, prohibition, advice and deduction, plus past modals such as should have and must have.

  4. Lesson 4

    Passive voice

    Active to passive in every tense, with modals, by + agent, two objects, the get-passive and "It is said that…".

  5. Lesson 5

    Reported speech

    Reporting statements, questions and orders: tense changes, pronouns, time words, say or tell, and reporting verbs.

  6. Lesson 6

    Causative and subjunctive

    Have something done, have someone do, get someone to do, make and let, plus the subjunctive after insist, suggest and demand.

  7. Lesson 7

    Gerunds and infinitives

    Verbs followed by -ing, by to + verb, or by both with a change in meaning, and the verb form after each helping word.

  8. Lesson 8

    Relative clauses

    who, which, that, whose, where and when, defining and non-defining clauses, and how to shorten them.

  9. Lesson 9

    Questions and tags

    Question word order, subject questions, embedded questions ("Do you know where…?"), tag questions and "So do I".

  10. Lesson 10

    Adjectives and comparisons

    Adjectives and adverbs, -ed and -ing adjectives, comparatives and superlatives, as… as, too and enough, so and such.

  11. Lesson 11

    Nouns, articles and quantifiers

    Countable and uncountable nouns, plural rules, a, an, the or no article, and much, many, few, little, some, any.

  12. Lesson 12

    Pronouns

    Subject, object and possessive pronouns, reflexives, each other, another and the other, and someone or anyone.

  13. Lesson 13

    Prepositions

    Prepositions of time, place and movement, plus the fixed adjective, verb and noun combinations that the ECL tests.

  14. Lesson 14

    Linking words

    Conjunctions and discourse markers: although, despite, however, therefore, because of, so that, and inversion after negative words.

    Each lesson links to the matching questions in the trainer, where your mistakes come back until you know them.
