Ranks, units and command

How a military unit is organized and who gives the orders.

squad

n.

a small army unit of about nine soldiers (two fire teams), led by a staff sergeant

platoon

a unit of three or four squads, led by a lieutenant

The platoon moved out at dawn.

company

n.

a unit of three to five platoons, led by a captain

battalion

enlisted

serving below the rank of officer

He served as an enlisted soldier before he became an officer.

NCO

noncommissioned officer: a corporal or a sergeant

commanding officer (CO)

the officer in command of a unit

The commanding officer signed the leave request.

executive officer (XO)

the second in command of a unit

The XO runs the unit when the commander is away.

chain of command

military time
