People often use the names ALCPT and ECL as if they were the same test. They come from the same school, the Defense Language Institute English Language Center (DLIELC), and both measure listening and reading. But they are used for different decisions.
The ECL decides, the ALCPT places and screens
The ALCPT handbook describes the ECL as the primary instrument used for assessing the English language proficiency of international military students
. The ECL is a strictly controlled test.
The American Language Course Placement Test (ALCPT) is used inside English language training programs. According to its 2025 handbook, it may be used to:
- place students in the right level of the American Language Course (ALC);
- check progress at the end of an ALC level;
- screen candidates to see if they are ready to take the ECL;
- evaluate the English of local personnel.
The handbook also says that the ALCPT is not used for ECL practice, promotion or bonus systems. Screening with the ALCPT first means fewer people take the ECL before they are ready.
Side by side
| ECL | ALCPT | |
|---|---|---|
| Main use | Official measure of English level for training decisions | Placement, progress checks, readiness for the ECL |
| Skills | Listening and reading | Listening and reading |
| Questions | 100 (paper or online) | 100: 50 listening, 50 reading |
| Time | About 75 minutes (about 25 for the adaptive version at DLI) | About 70 minutes: about 20 for listening, 35 for reading, plus instructions |
| Scores | 0 to 100, valid for 180 days | Linked to ALC book levels; scores of 29 or below are not valid indicators |
Who gives the ALCPT
DLIELC is the only source of ALCPT materials, and only authorized officials may handle, store and give the test. Real ALCPT forms are therefore not meant to circulate publicly.
What this means for your preparation
You cannot practice with real test forms, and you do not need to. Both tests reward the same skills: understanding grammar quickly, knowing the meaning of common and military words, and following spoken American English. That is what the trainer works on, with original questions:
- grammar and vocabulary questions with an explanation for each answer;
- a Listen button that reads every question and its choices aloud;
- timed practice tests of 20, 40, 60 or 100 questions.
