ECL test scores and levels explained

The 0 to 100 scale, course minimums, the 180-day validity, the once-a-month rule, and how ALCPT scores relate to the levels of the American Language Course.

Updated October 9, 2026

Your ECL score decides when you are ready for your course. Here is how the score works, why there is no single pass mark, how long a result stays valid, and how ALCPT scores relate to the levels of the American Language Course.

The 0 to 100 scale

All versions of the English Comprehension Level test (paper, online and computer-adaptive) are scored from 0 to 100. The score reflects how well you understand American English when you listen and when you read. The ECL does not test speaking or writing.

There is no single passing score

The ECL has no general pass mark. Each course sets the minimum ECL score it requires, so the same score can be enough for one course and too low for another. Your training office or security cooperation office can tell you the score for your course. Some courses also ask for a speaking test, the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI).

How long a score stays valid

An ECL score is valid for 180 days. DLIELC explains that language ability can fall if a person stops studying English after reaching the required score, so keep practicing after the test.

How often you can take the ECL

Regulations allow the ECL to be given to a student only once a month. Testing more often gives unstable results, partly because people get used to the test. Each attempt counts: arrive ready.

ALCPT scores and levels

The American Language Course Placement Test (ALCPT) is scored differently. Its scores are linked to the levels of the American Language Course books, which is why it is used to place students in the right level and to check their progress. Its 2025 handbook notes that scores of 29 or below are not valid indicators of a level. The ALCPT is also used to screen candidates before they take the ECL. See ECL vs ALCPT.

What your practice score on this site means

The percentage at the end of a practice test here shows how many questions you answered correctly. It is not an ECL score and cannot predict one: these are original questions, not official forms. Use it to follow your own progress: take the ECL practice test now, study for two weeks, and take it again.

How to raise your score

The ECL test preparation plan puts these steps in order.
